A shortlist begins with opportunity

A home run is a low-frequency outcome. That makes discipline more important, not less. The first task is to reduce the slate without confusing a model ranking with certainty.

Begin on the Slate or AI Says. These pages identify starting points from the live player pool. They are discovery tools: their job is to tell you which profiles deserve more time.

Opportunity comes before detail. Confirm that the game is active, the probable starter is current and the player is expected to appear. A confirmed lineup spot can improve the expected plate-appearance path; a missing or late lineup should increase uncertainty.

A ranking creates a question.The useful question is not “Will this player homer?” It is “What independent evidence supports this player relative to the rest of today’s slate?”

Build a case from independent signals

A productive shortlist usually has a foundation, a matchup and an environment. The signals should reinforce one another without being mistaken for copies of the same information.

Hitter powerSeason power, recent contact authority, barrels, ISO and slugging context establish whether the hitter can create the desired outcome.
Pitcher riskThe opposing starter’s vulnerability identifies whether the matchup adds opportunity. The risk index is not the hitter’s HR probability.
Pitch typeThe most relevant edge involves pitches the starter actually uses and pitches the hitter has shown the ability to damage.
ZonesHitter damage locations become more meaningful when they overlap the pitcher’s leak or attack locations.
EnvironmentWeather and park context can raise or lower the ceiling of an already credible profile. They should not manufacture one.
Game pathLineup position, protection and bullpen exposure influence how many useful opportunities may occur after the starter leaves.

The Full Board is useful for comparison. The player card is useful for explanation. Open the card and move through Why, Zones, Pitches, Spot, Splits and Recent rather than stopping at the first favorable number.

Try to disprove the play

The strongest research habit is actively looking for the reason a good-looking profile might fail. A hitter may have elite power but face a pitch mix that suppresses his damage. A vulnerable pitcher may attack a location the hitter rarely handles. Warm weather may be offset by wind moving in from the pull side.

Watch for dependent evidence

Several tags can describe the same underlying signal. A hitter labeled for power, barrels and slugging may have three useful descriptions of one strength—not three fully independent reasons. Confidence grows more meaningfully when hitter ability, pitcher weakness, pitch shape and environment all agree.

Do not force a fixed number of plays

Some slates provide several complete profiles. Others do not. A repeatable process should be allowed to produce a short list, a single lean or no strong conclusion at all.

A practical daily workflow

Verify the slate.Confirm games, probable pitchers, update time and lineup status.
Create a broad candidate pool.Use AI Says, Slate, or the Decision Center to find profiles worth investigating.
Test the pitcher and pitch mix.Use Pitcher Vulnerability and the Pitches tab to confirm the matchup is relevant.
Check location and context.Review Power Zones, weather, park and bullpen conditions.
Narrow, then document.Keep only the profiles supported across different signal families and note what could still go wrong.
