What the risk index is designed to do

The Pitcher Vulnerability page ranks the day’s probable starters on a 0–100 risk index. Higher numbers indicate a more vulnerable starting-pitcher profile relative to the live slate.

That distinction matters. The number is a risk index, not a probability that the pitcher will allow a home run. It is also not a probability assigned to any individual hitter. Its best use is directing attention: which offenses and matchups deserve a deeper look?

The live presentation considers the pitcher’s current statistical profile and stabilizes shorter samples toward the slate baseline. That keeps a small number of innings from being treated with the same certainty as a larger body of work.

Read the scale comparatively.A risk score tells you where a starter sits on today’s board. It does not convert directly into betting odds or an expected number of home runs.

Three ways the score gets overrated

Targeting every hitter against the top-ranked pitcher

Players on the same offense have different power, handedness, pitch-type strengths, lineup roles and expected opportunities. Pitcher risk improves the game context; it does not erase those differences.

Ignoring how the pitcher creates outs

A pitcher can carry a vulnerable overall profile while still possessing one pitch or attack location that limits a specific hitter. The relevant question is whether the hitter’s damage path intersects with the pitcher’s likely plan.

Treating a short sample as settled ability

Early-season innings, recent role changes and limited appearances can move surface statistics quickly. Sample context should affect confidence even when the directional signal remains useful.

Connect pitcher risk to a hitter-specific case

Once a pitcher moves a game onto the research list, open the Matchup Lab or a player card. The next checks should be specific to the batter.

Power foundationDoes the hitter’s season and recent profile show credible extra-base and home-run ability?
HandednessDoes the split support the expected batter-versus-pitcher side of the matchup?
Pitch mixWhich pitches does the starter use, and does the hitter damage those pitches?
Attack zonesDo the pitcher’s locations overlap the hitter’s strongest damage zones?
Lineup pathIs the hitter confirmed, and does the batting slot support useful plate appearances?

A high-risk starter paired with a weak hitter fit is still a weak hitter fit. A moderate-risk starter paired with elite hitter power and a direct pitch-type edge may be the more complete profile.

Rank the games.Use the risk page to identify the starters and offenses that deserve attention first.
Check sample and true innings.Let smaller samples reduce certainty rather than pretending every score has equal stability.
Identify the dangerous hitters.Move to the Slate or Full Board and compare the opposing lineup’s actual power profiles.
Validate the matchup mechanics.Check handedness, pitch type and zone overlap before keeping the hitter.
Add the late-game path.Review bullpen context without assuming the starter will face every batter four times.
